Remember last week when I posed the May Day vs. mayday question? Well, good news! Freshpaint's Head of Engineering, Peter Evans, turned to Wikipedia to answer the question I've been struggling with for years.
Here's the gist of it...in the early 1920s, when a lot of air traffic took place between France and England, a radio operator was asked to come up with a word that would indicate distress and be easily understood. The operator proposed the term "mayday" because it's the phonetic equivalent of the French m'aidez ("help me").
And as Wikipedia helpfully points out, the term is unrelated to the holiday May Day.
Learning is fun, friends. (**Seamless transition alert**) And that's not all you're going to learn in this week's newsletter. We've also got:
A product update about YouTube
More upcoming events (including a new webinar you'll want to tune in to)
A recap of two recent webinars
An article about the privacy paradox in healthcare marketing
An update to the FTC's Health Breach Notification Rule
Now, we're improving that feature by adding livestreaming support for embedded videos. That means if you have a page on your website where you run livestreams through YouTube, you can now do that in a privacy-compliant way with Freshpaint.
And while I've got you here, our product team is looking to chat with anyone interested in Freshpaint supporting their favorite A/B testing tools. Sound like you? Reply to this email and let me know.

Freshpaint's Compliant Corner
There's a paradox in healthcare marketing right now. Most marketing tools need data to create cost-effective, targeted marketing. But that same data can lead to severe financial damage for a healthcare organization.
Fortunately, OCR has offered a clear solution to this problem. In their updated guidance, they said that healthcare organizations that want to use data effectively should use a healthcare-specific Customer Data Platform (CDP). Does that sound like any SaaS product you know of? (Very obvious hint: you're reading a newsletter from that SaaS product right now.)
There's little doubt that privacy regulations are only going to get more stringent in the coming days, weeks, months, and years. The latest example of this is the FTC's newest update to The Health Breach Notification rule.
The expanded the rule to include health apps and health technologies not covered under HIPAA. The Health Breach Notification rule was originally intended protect consumer health data, particularly in situations not covered by HIPAA, but health apps lived in a bit of a grey area.
That ended with this update. So, it behooves health apps and really any health company dealing with consumer health data, to stop sharing their data with unauthorized third parties. Or face penalties from the FTC.
