In the very first episode of People of Healthcare Marketing, Adrienne Woods reflects on her 20+ year career, and why her proudest work isn't a flashy campaign, but making it easier (and safer) for patients to find care.
Because getting "Find a Doc" right means navigating privacy laws, fragmented data, and tech that was never built for healthcare. It's hard, often invisible work. And it matters.
A new Markup investigation found that health insurance exchanges in Nevada, Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island sent sensitive user data, like prescriptions, dosages, and health conditions, to companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Snapchat via web trackers.
Some exchanges shared whether users were pregnant or disabled; others sent names of doctors and medications. Most of this happened without users' knowledge, often via third-party tools embedded on official sites.
Even when names weren't included, the platforms could link this info to individual accounts, raising serious privacy and compliance risks.
